Mosaic Tiles Guide: Swimming Pool Mosaics, Gold Tiles and How to Choose the Right Design

A complete guide to mosaic tiles. Compare glass, ceramic, stone and metal mosaics, choose pool-ready swimming pool tiles, see where gold tiles work best and work out how many sheets you need.

Mosaic Tiles Guide: Swimming Pool Mosaics, Gold Tiles and How to Choose the Right Design

Mosaic tiles turn a plain wall, a shower or a swimming pool into a finished design feature. Small pieces on a mesh-backed sheet follow curves, wrap steps and create patterns that large-format tiles never manage. This guide covers the three questions we hear most often at Luxury Tiles EU: which mosaic tiles suit which room, how to choose swimming pool tiles that last, and where gold tiles work best. Every product mentioned below is in stock in our online range, with prices shown per sheet.

What Are Mosaic Tiles?

Mosaic tiles are small tiles, usually between 10 mm and 50 mm per piece, fixed to a mesh or dot-glued backing to form a sheet. A typical sheet measures around 30 x 30 cm, so you install a whole sheet at once rather than hundreds of individual pieces. The joints between the pieces give mosaics their texture and grip, and the small format lets the tile bend around curved walls, pool steps and niches.

Mosaics come in five main materials, each with its own strengths:

  • Glass mosaic tiles: waterproof, colour-stable and reflective. The first choice for swimming pools, showers and splashbacks.
  • Ceramic and porcelain mosaics: durable, easy to clean and good value. Many are frost-resistant and suitable for wet areas.
  • Natural stone mosaics: marble, travertine and pebble designs with natural variation in colour and veining.
  • Metal mosaics: stainless steel and metallic finishes for feature walls, bars and kitchen splashbacks.
  • Shell and pearl mosaics: iridescent decorative finishes for bathrooms and small feature areas.

Popular Mosaic Tile Patterns

Shape changes the character of a room as much as colour does. Herringbone mosaic tiles bring movement to a kitchen splashback or a shower wall. Our Mosaic tile herringbone CHB 5WG in white ceramic costs €4,03 per sheet and is frost-resistant, rated for permanently wet areas and listed as suitable for swimming pools.

Hexagon mosaic tiles suit bathroom floors and statement walls, while scallop mosaics add a soft, fan-shaped rhythm behind a basin or a bath. For a classic look, square mosaics in a single colour create a clean grid, and mixed-colour blends hide water marks and everyday wear.

Swimming Pool Tiles: What Makes a Tile Pool-Ready

Swimming pool tiles sit under water all year, face pool chemicals and go through winter frost in outdoor pools. A tile suitable for a bathroom wall is not automatically suitable for a pool. Before you order, check four points in the product specifications:

  • Area of usage: the specification should list swimming pool or permanent wet area.
  • Frost resistance: essential for any outdoor pool in a European climate.
  • Water absorption: glass mosaics absorb almost no water, which protects the tile and the joint.
  • Slip resistance: for pool floors, steps, beaches and surrounds, look for a rating such as R11 or class C.

Glass is the most popular material for a mosaic swimming pool because the surface stays colour-stable, resists chemicals and reflects light through the water. Every tile in our glass mosaic swimming pool collection lists its pool suitability, frost resistance and stone size on the product page.

The Glass Mosaic Swimming Pool Baltic Green 38x38mm gives a natural lagoon colour. It uses 38 x 38 mm glass stones, 4 mm thick, with a glossy surface. For a bright, classic pool, the Glass Swimming Pool Mosaic Lagune R11C White combines 25 x 25 mm eco glass stones with a matt surface and an R11/C slip resistance rating. That rating makes it a strong option for pool steps, shower floors and pool surrounds where bare feet need grip. Price: €5,00 per sheet.

Many pool owners combine two colours: a main colour for the basin and a darker or contrasting tile for the waterline, the steps and the lane lines. A white basin with a cyan waterline keeps the water bright, while a green or dark basin gives a natural, deeper look.

Gold Tiles: Where Gold Mosaics Work Best

Gold mosaic tiles bring warmth and a sense of luxury to a room in a way no other finish matches. Used well, a single gold feature wall behind a vanity, a bar or a bath becomes the focal point of the whole space. Used everywhere, gold overwhelms a room, so most designers keep gold tiles to one surface and pair them with neutral walls and floors.

Gold tiles come in different materials, and the material decides where the tile belongs:

  • Stainless steel gold mosaics: the Metallic Gold D940 Mosaic Tile 30x30cm has a satin finish on stainless steel. The specification lists walls only, so this tile suits splashbacks, feature walls and bars. Price: €17,45 per sheet.
  • Gold hexagon mosaics: the Mosaic tile Hexagon HXM 30GO is stainless steel in gold, rated for bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms and permanently wet areas. Price: €12,95 per sheet.
  • Gold glass mosaics: the Mosaic tile Crystal Desert XCM 8DSG blends gold tones in glass for bathrooms, kitchens and wet areas. Price: €10,80 per sheet.

Gold tiles in a swimming pool are a specialist choice. None of the gold mosaics above lists swimming pool use, so for a gold accent in or around a pool, ask our team for a product rated for permanent immersion and pool chemicals before you order.

Choosing Mosaic Tiles Room by Room

  • Kitchen splashback: glass, metal or ceramic mosaics. Gold and metallic finishes work well here because the area is small and easy to clean.
  • Bathroom walls: almost any mosaic material. Marble and shell mosaics create a spa feel.
  • Shower floors: choose a mosaic with a slip resistance rating. The many grout joints add grip underfoot.
  • Swimming pools: glass mosaics rated for pools, frost and permanent immersion.
  • Pool surrounds and steps: a slip-resistant tile such as an R11/C rated glass mosaic.

How Many Sheets of Mosaic Tiles Do You Need?

Every product page shows the sheet size and, where available, the number of sheets per square metre. Our built-in calculator turns your area into a quantity for you. To check the maths yourself, here is an example with 30 x 30 cm sheets:

  • One sheet covers 0,3 m x 0,3 m = 0,09 m².
  • For a 10 m² wall: 10 ÷ 0,09 = 111,1 sheets.
  • Add 10% for cuts and future repairs: 111,1 x 1,1 = 122,2, so order 123 sheets.

For pools, ask your installer to confirm the allowance, as steps, curves and lane lines need extra cuts. Order the full quantity in one go so every sheet comes from the same batch and the colour matches.

Installation and Care Tips

Mosaic installation depends on the tile material, the backing and the substrate. Glass and pool mosaics need adhesives and grouts rated for the job, and outdoor pools need products rated for frost and permanent immersion. Follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions and use a qualified installer for any swimming pool project.

For everyday care, clean mosaic tiles with mild soap and water and avoid harsh or acidic cleaners, especially on natural stone and metal finishes. Our guide on how to keep your tiles looking great covers cleaning by material in more detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are mosaic tiles good for swimming pools?

Yes, glass mosaic tiles are the most common choice for swimming pools. They absorb almost no water, keep their colour and follow curves and steps. Always check that the product specification lists swimming pool use and frost resistance.

What is the best colour for swimming pool tiles?

White and light blue tiles give clear, bright water. Cyan and turquoise create a holiday-style lagoon colour. Green and dark tiles give a natural, deeper look and hide marks well.

Are gold tiles suitable for bathrooms?

Yes. Gold glass and stainless steel mosaics rated for wet areas suit bathroom walls and feature areas. Check the area of usage on each product, as some gold tiles are rated for walls only.

Do you deliver mosaic tiles across Europe?

Yes. We ship from our warehouse in Germany to all EU countries, with express delivery in 1 to 2 days and free EU delivery on orders over €299. See our FAQ page for delivery details.
